2. Art in Theory 1900-1990: An Anthology of Changing Ideas

Description

Current debates about the status of Modernism have led to an increasing interest in critical and aesthetic theories, and to a questioning of some of the traditional assumptions and limits of art history. The aim of this substantial anthology is to equip the student, teacher and interested general reader with the necessary materials for an up-to-date understanding of twentieth-century art.
Beside the writings of the century's major artists, Art in Theory includes relevant texts by critics, philosophers, politicians and literary figures. It is organised into eight sections, from the legacy of Symbolism at the turn of the century to contemporary debates about the Postmodern. Each section is prefaced by a brief essay. There are introductions for all of the 300-plus texts, which serve to place theories and critical approaches in context. The result is both a comprehensive collection of documents on twentieth-century art and an encylopaedic history of relevant theory.

6. Movements in Art Since 1945 (World of Art)

Feature

Thames Hudson

Description

This classic account of the history of the visual arts from the end of World War II to the new millennium has now been completely rewritten, revised, expanded, and updated.

The fifth edition reflects the latest developments in a wide-ranging introduction and nine new chapters that deal with the radical transformations that have taken place in contemporary art. Among the topics covered are the increasing dominance of photography, film, and video, and the emergence of a new post-Post-Expressionist group of "Abject" artists whose work stresses feelings of alienation in Western industrial societies, often through the reintroduction of narrative. The emergence of an opposing trend of idealizing classicism, particularly in Italy and Russia, is discussed, and there is increased coverage of the burgeoning practice of art "on the periphery" in Third World countries, where artists have absorbed Western modernism and then created new terms of reference for artistic expression adapted to their own cultures. Numerous additional reproductions illustrate all the recent developments in this completely redesigned edition, and there are a full bibliography and comprehensive chronologies of key events. No other account of the art of the last fifty-five years provides as much up-to-date information about art issues, developments, and players. 100 color and 190 black & white

10. The Image of the Black in Western Art, Volume V: The Twentieth Century, Part 2: The Rise of Black Artists

Description

In the 1960s, art patrons Dominique and Jean de Menil founded an image archive showing the ways that people of African descent have been represented in Western art from the ancient world to modern times. Highlights from the image archive, accompanied by essays written by major scholars, appeared in three largeformat volumes, consisting of one or more books, that quickly became collectors items. A halfcentury later, Harvard University Press and the Du Bois Institute are proud to have republished five of the original books and five completely new ones, extending the series into the twentieth century.

The Rise of Black Artists, the second of two books on the twentieth century and the final volume in The Image of the Black in Western Art, marks an essential shift in the series and focuses on representation of blacks by black artists in the West. This volume takes on important topics ranging from urban migration within the United States to globalization, to Ngritude and cultural hybridity, to the modern black artists relationship with European aesthetic traditions and experimentation with new technologies and media. Concentrating on the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean, essays in this volume shed light on topics such as photography, jazz, the importance of political activism to the shaping of black identities, as well as the post-black art world.
